Due to high chemical resistance, PE pipes are a good choice for the transfer of urban and industrial wastewater and are increasingly used in underground and underwater wastewater pipelines. Flexibility and adaption to the bed profile in submarine lines and appropriate bend radius during placement will minimize the use of fittings. Leak-free welding fittings reliably prevent spread of pollution to groundwater and also penetration of groundwater to the wastewater network and increased transfer load.
PE pipes and fittings are flexible enough to significantly reduce the risk of failure when facing unavoidable ground motions such as thrust and earthquake compared with other piping systems.
In the case of wastewater or aggressive and corrosive fumes in chemical industries or in the presence of aggressive soils or groundwater, PE manholes are recommended to be used in the transmission system and wastewater collection for inspection, ventilation, cleaning, discharge and changing flow conditions. PE is not able to create a strong bond with concrete. So special measures must be taken for joining PE pipes into concrete manholes to ensure sealing of fittings.
Prandtl-Colebrook correlation is used for hydraulic design of PE sewer pipes with a roughness factor (kb) of 0.25 to 0.4 mm.
For gravity sewer flows, the thickness of pipe wall is determined based on external pressures exerted by ground and traffic loads. To understand the effect of such tensions on highly flexible PE pipes, special properties of viscoelastic materials should be taken into account, because the methods for calculating static loading of rigid pipes such as asbestos or concrete pipes or elastic pipes such as steel pipes cannot be used in this case.
P.E.S single-wall PE pipes and PE fittings for gravity systems and high-pressure industrial and urban wastewater transfer and waste collection and surface water networks are designed based on application, implementation and customer requirements. PE pipes and fittings are produced from high-quality raw materials by modern machinery and technology in accordance with DIN 19537-1, 2 to provide maximum operational advantages for industrial and urban water and wastewater services.
